Monday, January 16, 2023 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer in their communities. Once again, in observance of the occasion, Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School is pleased to facilitate service activities for alumnae, students, faculty, and staff, both near and far.
Alumnae across the country are encouraged to spend time serving their local communities. Those in the Philadelphia area and their children (ages 4 and up) are invited to gather in the Gwynedd gymnasium from 10AM-12PM to participate in activities to support the Cradles to Crayons Ready for Learning Campaign. Can't make it in person? Join us remotely! Here's how: - Drop off donations at GMA anytime before January 16 in the bin inside the front door.
-
Find a location to drop off donations for Cradles to Crayons in Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago.
-
Make Back to School cards with your family and friends and send them to Cradles to Crayons at 4700 Wissahickon Avenue, Suite 142, Philadelphia, PA 19144. (They need 50,000 cards a year for the 50,000 backpacks they prepare each year!)
- Purchase items from the Cradles to Crayons wishlist and have them shipped directly to GMA.
-
Donate to Strawberry Market.
Do you want to do more?
Students, faculty, and staff are partnering with Laurel House, a comprehensive domestic violence agency serving women and children in Montgomery County for their own Day of Service. They are looking for the items below, which can also be dropped off in the bin inside GMA's front door before January 16 or brought with you to the Alumnae Day of Service.

Join Our Virtual Wellness Seminar
Gwynedd will be hosting a series of virtual seminars to present content similar to what we teach our students, but with an adult twist! On Wednesday, February 1 from 7-8:30PM, guest speaker Catherine Steiner-Adair, Ed.D., clinical psychologist, leadership and parenting expert, will discuss the fascinating science around how our digital world has changed teens’ brains, what it means for all aspects of a child’s development and how we can ensure that our children are kind, compassionate, and ethically centered in an age in which one-to-one conversation and engagement has been replaced with snapchat and texting.
The Wellness Wheel Webinars will focus on topics taught as a part of GMAHS's Wellness Wheel curriculum. This program provides our students with interactive and engaging lessons that focus on physical and mental health, self-awareness, leadership, diversity, equity & inclusion, and many practical life skills that provide balance—all of which are essential for success at Gwynedd and beyond. Registration coming soon.

Skate Into the New Year
What do prancing lions, traditional Chinese dancers and ice skating have in common? The Lunar New Year celebration! January 22 is the Lunar New Year, an ancient Chinese festival that marks the beginning of Spring and the arrival of the new year. To commemorate the occasion, the AAPI Club would love the Gwynedd community to join in on the celebration and attend Philly’s annual Lunar New Year event on ice at Dilworth Park in Center City Philadelphia on Saturday, January 21 from 5-8PM. Independent Schools Celebrate Diversity
Each year the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) hosts the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), an opportunity for students who attend independent schools across the country to unite, form alliances, and engage in meaningful conversations about race and gender identity. This year, Simone French '25, co-leader of the Diversity Club and Aiden Arrington '25, co-leader and founder of the Black Alliance Club, attended the event in San Antonio, TX from November 30-December 3rd.

Gwynedd sponsors student attendees in exchange to a commitment to bring back and implement one idea that could positively influence or advance Gwynedd’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. Past student initiatives from SDLC attendees included themed Black History Month celebrations, Gwynedd’s participation in ADL’s No Place for Hate Campaign, and the expansion of our DEIJ alliance clubs. |
